Variation on Brian Eno's ``Music For Airports``

Streaming and Digital Bundle

Like “Variation on Brian Eno’s “Thursday Afternoon””, this almost simultaneously recorded piece is based on replica loops used by Eno in his original work, comprising piano & choir phrases used on “2/1” and “1/2” from “Music For Airports” (1978), combined, in chance formations, with a new CBQ guitarscape, created by the treatment and manipulation of three pieces from the “Disquietmusik” Frippertronics series. The 80 minute variation can be listened to “gaplessly” by downloading (Downloaders also receive 4 hours of exclusive bonus material).

Stemming from a chance conversation about “the first three CDs you bought” (David’s 1st was Eno’s “Thursday Afternoon” in October 1985), this LP uses replicas of the piano, sine wave, drone and shimmer loops used by Eno on the original recording, along with half speed “sky saw” guitar recorded by David in 1997.  The new piece is roughly the same length as Eno’s original and can be listened to “gaplessly” if you download the LP (Downloaders also receive 2 hours of exclusive bonus material).

Twenty six relatively short ambient works, created by the treatment of six edits of pieces originally recorded and released by David as The Heavenly Music Corporation in January 1989.  Many of the pieces on the album appear to have absolutely nothing going on except a far off drone but, if you listen closely, you may hear what are, by definition, almost imperceptible changes in the ambience, created by the treatment.

Eight new songs, seven written and recorded in quick succession in July 2021, while the opening track was created shortly after the release of “Sparklemusik”. Each is based around loops and samples (including of CBQ’s own work) which have been edited, manipulated, treated and arranged into brand new creations.

Haydn

Along with my previous works based on the music of Satie, Cage, Beethoven, Schoenberg, Webern and Berg, I had long wanted to create an album around the music of Joseph Haydn but the inspiration for these recordings came, initially, from the music of Steve Reich.

Since the release of my last song-based LP “Starlightnight”, in August 2012, I’ve been concentrating on soundscape releases and am now, probably, better known for those LPs, than the nine, song-based records, I released from 1997 to 2012, all of which are still available here.

But now, at last, these are the sixteen songs of “Sparklemusik”, the follow up to “Starlightnight”.

I was listening to a disc of Schoenberg’s piano music in early February and it occurred to me that the next recording in my “composer” series, following on from “Satie”, “Cage” and “Beethoven”, could be based on the Second Viennese School.
